Thin seedlings without disturbing the keepers

When several seeds sprout together, the tray can look satisfyingly successful. A week later, the same crowd may be competing for light and space.

Choose what stays

Wait until you can distinguish the seedlings and, where appropriate, see their first true leaves. Keep the strongest healthy seedling in a cell rather than automatically saving the tallest. A very tall, thin seedling may be stretching for light.

For delicate roots, snip unwanted seedlings at the mix surface with clean small scissors. Pulling them out can tug the roots of the plant you intended to keep. If you plan to transplant extras, check whether that species tolerates disturbance and handle carefully by a leaf rather than squeezing the stem.

Space belongs above and below ground

After thinning, make sure the remaining seedlings receive adequate light. Removing competitors will not fix a dim position. Water gently and allow excess water to drain; tiny plants cannot use the same volume of water as a mature container display.

It can feel wasteful to remove a healthy seedling. Think of the space you are providing as part of its care. Next time, sow fewer seeds or use more cells. A manageable number of sturdy plants is usually a better result than a trayful that never has room to develop.
