Saving seed begins with knowing the plant. Make sure it is correctly identified and check whether collecting or growing it is appropriate in your region.
Watch the seed head develop
Leave selected healthy flowers to finish rather than deadheading them. Look up the signs of mature seed for that species. Collect in dry conditions when possible, before seed scatters, and keep different plants in separate labeled paper containers.
Do not seal damp seed in plastic. Allow it to dry in a suitable airy place away from intense heat, then clean away loose debris. Label the plant, variety if known, and collection year.
Expect some variation
Seed from hybrids or cross-pollinated flowers may not produce plants identical to the parent. That can be an interesting experiment, but it is not a reliable way to reproduce a specific purchased color or form.
Store dry seed cool and dry, protected from moisture and pests. Before sowing a large batch later, test a small sample or use a modest trial. Keep enough information to know what you are growing. An envelope labeled “nice pink ones” is charming until several unrelated seedlings appear and you need to work out their light, spacing, and temperature requirements.
